Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), receiving the party’s membership card number 001 in a high-profile ceremony on Friday.
Governor Mutfwang was formally welcomed into the APC on January 2, 2026, at the Victoria Gowon Hall, Government House, Rayfield, Jos, where top party leaders, stakeholders and dignitaries converged to witness what APC leaders described as a historic moment for the State.
The presentation of APC membership card number 001 to the serving governor underscored the significance the ruling party attached to the defection, which effectively places Plateau State under APC control and completes the party’s sweep of the entire North Central geopolitical zone.
The governor’s move followed his formal resignation from the PDP in a letter dated December 29, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of his Ampang West Ward, Dasjak Sunday Longyol. In the letter, Mutfwang cited the need for an alternative political platform that would better position him to serve the interests of Plateau State.
“I appreciate the support of party leaders, members and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me,” the governor said in his resignation letter.
APC officials said Mutfwang was officially presented with his membership card during a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, marking his full integration into the party’s structure ahead of expected political realignments in the State.
APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, in a statement said:

The defection adds to the growing list of high-profile party switches by sitting governors and senior politicians, reinforcing the APC’s dominance in the North Central and further weakening the opposition PDP in a region it once considered a stronghold.
