The Edo State Police Command has strongly denounced a violent attack on one of its officers by suspected miscreants at Upper Sakponba, a densely populated area of Benin City.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer Edo State Command, CSP Moses Joel Yamu on Friday, the Command described the assault as “senseless” and “criminal,” stressing that such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“The Edo State Police Command strongly condemns the recent attack on one of our officers by a group of unruly individuals,” the statement read. “Such a senseless act of violence against a law enforcement officer who was carrying out his lawful duty is both unacceptable and criminal.”

While no life was lost in the incident—contrary to false claims circulating on social media—police authorities confirmed that calm has since been restored in the area. Investigations have been launched to uncover the motive behind the assault and bring the culprits to justice.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to caution young people against acts of lawlessness, particularly those targeting security personnel.

“Attacking a police officer is an attack on the rule of law and the safety of all citizens,” he stated. “Anyone who takes the law into their own hands by attacking security personnel will face the full force of the law.”

He further appealed to members of the public to support the police in their efforts to maintain law and order across the State.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and emphasised that while officers will continue to discharge their duties with professionalism and integrity, any threat to their safety or attempts to undermine law enforcement would be met with swift and decisive action.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or emergencies via the police control room hotlines: 08037646272 and 08077773721.
