The Edo State Police Command has confirmed separate incidents of unrest at a political gathering of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, insisting no lives were lost despite widespread panic and property damage.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command said trouble began at about 2:55pm during an ADC event at its state secretariat on Ogbelaka Street, off Sapele Road, when suspected hoodlums allegedly infiltrated the venue after the programme had officially ended.
Police said the disruption triggered panic and a stampede as the attackers chased party members and vandalised items at the venue, including plastic chairs and canopies set up for the event.
“Police patrol teams swiftly responded to the distress call, but the hoodlums fled upon sighting operatives,” the statement said.
The Command maintained that no gunshot injuries or fatalities were recorded, adding that only one woman sustained minor injuries during the stampede and was treated at a nearby chemist before being discharged.
However, the police confirmation appears to contrast with earlier claims by eyewitnesses and party officials who alleged gunfire and multiple injuries during the attack.
Further details obtained by this online newspaper indicate that a second incident was reported less than an hour later at the residence of ADC State Chairman and former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.
According to the police, reports of gunshots were received at about 3:48pm, and upon arrival, officers observed signs of malicious damage, including shattered vehicle windscreens and other vandalised property. Again, the Command stated that no casualties were recorded.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation to identify and prosecute those behind the incidents.
The Command also reassured political actors of adequate security, warning that acts of violence will not be tolerated, while urging residents to remain calm and provide useful information.
Meanwhile, political party leaders in the State have been invited to a security meeting with the police to address rising tensions and ensure peaceful political activities going forward.
