The Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, has made headlines for its unwavering integrity after rejecting a $100,000 bribe offered by a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster, Patrick Akpoguma.
The suspect, a self-confessed cybercriminal, is accused of orchestrating various online scams, including romance fraud, identity theft, and cryptocurrency-related crimes.
Addressing the press, Assistant Inspector General of Police Adegoke Fayoade disclosed that Akpoguma’s illicit activities were uncovered following multiple reports from residents of Chevron Drive, Lekki, where the suspect resides. Investigations revealed a sophisticated operation in which Akpoguma impersonated high-profile individuals online to defraud unsuspecting victims.
“Patrick Akpoguma exploited his victims by posing as figures like Colonel Matt Herbert, a U.S. Army officer, and Adam Taggart, a renowned cryptocurrency expert,” AIG Fayoade explained.
“He fabricated elaborate narratives, convincing victims to send money under the guise of funding major projects. The funds were often sent through Bitcoin Trust Wallets or blockchain transactions.”
To enhance his deception, Akpoguma went to extreme lengths, including purchasing a custom-made silicone mask to assume the identity of his targets online. The mask, valued at $11,200, was instrumental in his fraudulent schemes, which spanned multiple platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
During the investigation, Akpoguma attempted to bribe the police with $100,000 to secure his freedom.
“The money was registered as evidence, and the investigation proceeded undeterred,” AIG Fayoade said.
In a shocking confession, Akpoguma admitted that his criminal career was driven by a desire for quick wealth. “I started fraud three years ago because I felt too intelligent to work for a salary. I’ve made over $500,000 from scams, which helped me acquire properties in Lagos and Edo State and a GLE Benz worth N100 million,” he stated.
Despite his claims of being a “benevolent fraudster,” Akpoguma now faces legal repercussions. The police have concluded their investigation, and he is set to be arraigned in court.
The Zone 2 Command’s rejection of the bribe underscores its commitment to ethical policing, with AIG Fayoade reaffirming the force’s dedication to combating cybercrime and maintaining public trust.
