Police in Anambra State have formally invited Father Jude Muokwe, a Catholic Priest, for questioning following allegations of him assaulting a school teacher, Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen. The incident, which has drawn widespread attention, reportedly occurred last Wednesday when the priest allegedly flogged the 50-year-old teacher after a dispute regarding school fees.

The altercation began when Mrs. Maureen, a Primary 6 teacher at Angel’s Primary School in Ifitedunu, raised concerns about deductions from lesson fees by the school administration. It is said that Maureen entered a classroom where Father Muokwe and other staff members were holding a meeting without his permission, which led to the heated exchange.

A distressing video showing Maureen in tears soon circulated on social media, further intensifying the controversy. Local sources have confirmed that despite two visits by police to Father Muokwe’s residence, the priest has yet to respond to the police invitation for questioning.

The Catholic Diocese of Awka has intervened in the matter, expressing regret over the alleged actions of the priest. In a statement issued by the Diocese’s Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, the Church reiterated its commitment to maintaining integrity and respect within its educational institutions. “We cannot condone any form of misconduct in any of our schools,” the statement read.

As investigations continue, there are indications that both the Church and government officials in Anambra may explore alternative dispute resolution methods to address the ongoing issue between the priest and the teacher.
