President Bola Tinubu has mandated the immediate release of all minors who were detained and are facing legal action for their involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests, which swept across Nigeria in August.
Announcing this at a press briefing today, November 4, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the president’s directive underscores his commitment to human rights and justice for all citizens, especially vulnerable groups like children.
The directive also calls for a comprehensive investigation into the actions of law enforcement officers involved in the arrest, detention, and legal proceedings against the minors.
The president emphasised that any officials found responsible for misconduct or excessive force would face stringent disciplinary measures.
The Minister further disclosed that President Tinubu has instructed the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to oversee the welfare of the released minors, ensuring they receive appropriate medical and psychological support to aid in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
This development follows a surge in public criticism after videos surfaced of the minors in visibly poor health, with some reportedly collapsing in court. The distressing footage has intensified calls for government accountability and compassion towards young protestors, raising broader concerns about the treatment of minors in the justice system.
