As part of a broader strategy to curtail the cost of governance in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to halt visa processing for government officials intending to travel to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
This freeze will apply to officials who cannot provide evidence of their direct involvement in official schedule activities.
A statement from Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale revealed that measures have also been put in place to prevent any potential misuse of this directive. The U.S.
Mission in Nigeria has been informed about the adjusted visa processing procedures. Additionally, Nigeria’s Permanent Mission in New York has been mandated to ensure that only government officials listed in the protocol provided by the approving authority receive accreditation.
The President’s directive further mandates that all Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies ensure that officials included in the UNGA delegation significantly limit the number of accompanying aides and staff.
Instances of excess or irregularities in this regard will be rectified during the final verification process.
According to the President’s orders, these actions are aligned with the principle that government officials and expenses should mirror the prudence and sacrifices being made by conscientious citizens across the nation.
