President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The swearing-in took place on Friday, with Justice Kekere-Ekun assuming her new role following the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The ceremony, which began promptly at 11:38 AM, saw Justice Kekere-Ekun take her oaths of office before taking her seat at the Council Chambers, positioned to the left of President Tinubu at exactly 11:45 AM.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s ascension to the highest judicial position in the country marks a significant milestone, as she becomes the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria. She follows in the footsteps of Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who served as CJN from July 2012 to November 2014.
Her appointment came after her nomination by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on August 15, and she will serve in an acting capacity until her confirmation by the Senate.
The event was attended by a host of distinguished personalities, including Justices of the Supreme Court, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Professor Julius Ihonbvere representing the leadership of the House of Representatives, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, and the immediate past Chief Justice, Justice Ariwoola, among others.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s elevation to the position of CJN is widely seen as a continuation of her illustrious career on the bench, where she has been known for her dedication to justice and the rule of law.
