The Police Service Commission (PSC) has launched a four-day comprehensive data protection awareness programme in Abuja, warning of the growing importance of safeguarding sensitive information in modern policing and public administration.
The training, which commenced on Monday, September 21, at the Commission’s corporate headquarters, was formally flagged off by the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd).
Speaking at the opening, Argungu stressed the critical role of data security in the Commission’s operations, urging participants to maximise the training and strengthen the PSC’s capacity to protect sensitive information in line with Nigeria’s data protection regulations.
The programme is being organised by Charistech Consulting Ltd., a licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation, in partnership with the PSC.
Chief Executive Officer of Charistech Consulting Ltd., Mr. Philip Aiwekhoe, said the training curriculum was specifically aligned with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.
The programme, scheduled for September 21 to 24, brings together PSC staff and Board Members, while prospective Data Protection Officers will receive a dedicated session on September 23.
The organisers said the training is particularly designed for personnel involved in handling sensitive operations, with emphasis on regulatory compliance, risk mitigation and secure data management.
Facilitators noted that the programme would help strengthen a culture of data security and privacy within the Commission, reduce exposure to data breaches and improve institutional compliance with Nigeria’s data protection framework.
Officials of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) were also present to observe the training.
The initiative underscores the PSC’s renewed focus on strengthening data governance and protecting sensitive information as technology continues to reshape policing and public administration in Nigeria.
