Fresh details have surfaced on the circumstances surrounding the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, contradicting the official explanation that he stepped down for personal reasons.
According to presidency sources, Mr Egbetokun was directed to resign during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
While the presidency publicly stated that the former police chief cited “family issues” requiring his full attention, insiders familiar with the development said the move was not entirely voluntary.
Sources further revealed that the decision followed mounting concerns within government circles over security challenges and other internal considerations, although no official detailed explanation has been released.
Mr Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023 as Nigeria’s 22nd Inspector-General of Police, had been expected to remain in office until October 2027 following amendments to the Police Act that allowed a fixed four-year tenure.
He has since been replaced in acting capacity by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, pending formal confirmation.
