A group of over 100 religious leaders and palace officials made their way to the Edo State High Court on Thursday to voice their support for Oba Ewuare II.
The hearing was for a case brought forth by two suspended Enigie (Dukes) of Evbuobanosa and Egbaen Siluko Dukedoms in Benin Kingdom, Prof Gregory Akenzua and Chief Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, who were challenging their suspension from their respective positions by the Oba.
The pair argued that only the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, had the authority to remove them from their positions, not the monarch.
During the hearing, the court admitted the Benin Traditional Council as a party in the suit, joining Oba Ewuare II and the Edo State Government as defendants. The ruling was in response to an application filed by the second defendant’s lead counsel, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George, SAN, Prof Edoba Omoregie and his team against the claimants.
Justice Peter Akhihiero directed all parties to amend their relevant documents in the case to reflect the decision, and adjourned the hearing until July 15, 2024.
Security was tight at the State High Court Complex, and supporters of the Oba were not allowed into the court due to their large numbers. Despite this, groups and members of the royal family and chiefs displayed their support for the Oba outside the court.
