The political tension in Kano State has increased as the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, publicly urged Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to resign from office amid ongoing political realignments in the state.
Waiya made the comments during a live interview, saying that effective governance depends on trust, loyalty and mutual confidence among members of the executive council.
He argued that since Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recently defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and many political leaders followed the deputy governor’s refusal to shift his political allegiance creates a divide at the heart of government.
“The system of a governor and deputy governor is one ticket; they move together,” the commissioner said, stressing that the pair were elected jointly and are expected to share the same political direction. He added that if the deputy governor does not agree with the governor’s choice, “the most honourable option is to step aside”.
Waiya also linked political unity to better governance outcomes, saying that ongoing disagreements may undermine confidence in executive council decisions and hamper efforts to pursue development initiatives for Kano State.
The appeal comes amid broader shifts in the state’s political landscape, where several lawmakers and officials have realigned with the APC following Governor Yusuf’s defection a move his supporters argue will strengthen cooperation between Kano and the federal government in attracting federal projects.
