A romantic night out turned fatal for a Brazilian couple after their car plunged off a 1,300ft cliff in the early hours of Monday, 4 August.
The victims, identified as Adriana Machado Ribeiro, 42, and Marcone da Silva Cardoso, 26, were reportedly engaging in an intimate act when the tragedy occurred in Venda Nova do Imigrante, southeastern Brazil.
Police investigations suggest the pair had driven to a hang-gliding launch ramp after dropping friends home on the evening of Sunday, 3 August. Authorities believe the vehicle rolled over the cliff edge at about 1am, falling roughly 100 metres before striking a rock, ejecting the occupants, and continuing to tumble another 300 metres before coming to rest in a mangled heap.
Their bodies, found naked near the wreckage by a caretaker at around 7am, showed no signs of violence, according to lead investigator Alberto Roque Peres. “There were no indications of foul play at the scene or on the bodies, and the car’s handbrake was engaged,” he told local media.
Police are examining whether the couple’s movements inside the parked vehicle inadvertently caused it to roll forward. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud crash between 1:30am and 2am, but thick vegetation and darkness prevented anyone from seeing what had happened.
