A tragic incident has unfolded in Ilorin, Kwara State, where a final-year student at the Kwara State College of Education, Lawal Hafsoh Yetunde, has been brutally murdered and dismembered, allegedly by her boyfriend. The suspect, whom Yetunde had met through a social media platform, reportedly killed her for ritual purposes.
Yetunde, 22, went missing on Monday, 10 February 2025, after attending a naming ceremony. She was reportedly called by a friend, and left in haste, abandoning her lunch. Her family became concerned when they could not contact her, prompting them to report her disappearance to the Oja Oba Police Station in Ilorin the following day.
Using her phone number, police were able to trace her last call to a man residing in the Offa Garage District of Ilorin. Initial interrogations saw the suspect deny involvement, claiming that Yetunde had died of an asthma attack after he invited her over. However, a search of his residence uncovered chilling evidence of foul play.
The police discovered Yetunde’s dismembered body concealed in a bowl, along with the tools used to mutilate her. This led to the suspect’s confession, and he was subsequently arrested. Authorities have confirmed that the case is now under active investigation, with the suspect in custody at the police headquarters in Ilorin.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” said a police source. “Not only has a young woman’s life been tragically taken, but the evidence found at the suspect’s residence suggests that this may not have been his first crime of this nature.”
A troubling pattern of violent deaths involving women continues to emerge, as Yetunde’s murder follows several high-profile cases in recent months. Earlier this year, gospel singer Timilehin Ajayi was accused of murdering his girlfriend, Salome Adaidu, in a similar fashion. Additionally, Akwa Ibom police are investigating the death of cosmetics artist Emrich Effanga, who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Ndifreke.
The Kwara State Police Command has praised the swift response of officers in solving the case and promised that investigations will continue. “We commend the efforts of the detectives who worked tirelessly to solve this case,” stated police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi. “We are fully committed to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice.”
