It was an atmosphere of grief and solemn reflection on Saturday as family, friends, and colleagues bade farewell to Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a promising news anchor and producer with Arise Television, who was laid to rest in her hometown of Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Fondly called Sommie by friends and colleagues, the well-loved journalist was killed in late September during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, a tragedy that sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s media and entertainment community.
The funeral mass, held at St Theresa Catholic Church, Agulu, drew a cross-section of mourners, including the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, chieftains of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), media professionals, and other dignitaries.
Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie urged the grieving family to take solace in the impactful life Sommie lived, despite her untimely passing.
“The Lord who created us knows the beginning from the end. Some of you may be unhappy that a life has been cut short, but you won’t know if that is how God planned it,” he said.
In his tribute, Peter Obi expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful reminder of life’s fragility.
“We cannot question God. When I heard of her death, I didn’t even know she was from Agulu before I tweeted about it,” Obi said.
“Our coming here will help to console you, but we know that this loss is a huge one. It is the wish of God, and none of us can question Him. Please remember her and her family in your prayers.”
As the casket was lowered into the ground, tears flowed freely from mourners who described Maduagwu as a vibrant, intelligent, and compassionate young journalist whose life and career were tragically cut short.
Her colleagues at Arise Television paid glowing tributes to her professionalism and dedication, describing her as “a rising star who gave her all to every story she told.”
Though gone too soon, many at the service agreed that Somtochukwu’s legacy of courage, grace, and excellence in journalism would continue to inspire a generation of young broadcasters across Nigeria.
