Amid Nigeria’s mounting economic and social pressures, the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has expressed optimism that the new year will usher in meaningful improvement for individuals and institutions across the country.
Speaking on Wednesday at UBTH’s Nine Lessons and Carols Night and End-of-Year Party for staff and students in Benin City, Prof. Ize-Iyamu encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite prevailing hardships, stressing that lasting hope is anchored in faith.
She said the festive season represents renewal, joy and transformation, adding that true strength in difficult times comes from faith in Christ. “UBTH cares, just as Christ cares. When you have Christ, you have hope,” she said.
Reflecting on her first four months in office, the CMD commended staff, students and members of management for their support and cooperation, describing the period as both challenging and rewarding. She assured them that the years ahead would offer greater opportunities for growth, innovation and service delivery.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to excellence, professionalism and patient-centred care, expressing confidence that UBTH would continue to provide quality healthcare while positively impacting lives.
The end-of-year celebration concluded with a goodwill visit to hospital wards, where the CMD, accompanied by members of management, staff and students, distributed gifts to patients and newborn babies, reinforcing the institution’s message of compassion and shared humanity at the close of the year.
