President Bola Tinubu has called on young Nigerians engaged in digital media to wield their platforms with a heightened sense of responsibility and commitment to national unity.
Speaking at the Progressives Digital Media Summit held in Abuja on Friday, the President urged content creators and online influencers to verify information before dissemination and use their digital influence to build a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
“Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility,” Tinubu stated.
The President also advised social media practitioners to focus on content that fosters job creation, inspires positive change, and avoids divisive rhetoric. He warned that digital platforms should not become breeding grounds for misinformation or societal polarisation.
“Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” he said. “Digital media is now a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change.”
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to supporting digital innovation, Tinubu referenced the National Digital Innovation Fund and other startup-friendly policies aimed at encouraging youth participation in the tech economy.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, praised the influence of digital media, describing its advocates as torchbearers of a “reborn Nigeria”.
“You are the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria. The road may be challenging, but it is necessary,” he remarked.
Also speaking at the summit, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, raised concerns over the unchecked spread of misinformation, deepfakes, and AI-generated falsehoods targeting political figures.
“Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents,” Onanuga warned. “Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections.”
Summit convener and Presidential Aide on New Media, Segun Dada, acknowledged the transformative power of digital media and its increasing role in shaping public opinion. He, however, urged participants to remain vigilant about the dangers of privacy violations and online extremism.
The summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development”, brought together digital strategists, political communicators, and influential content creators to chart a path towards a more responsible and impactful media landscape in Nigeria.
