The Lagos State Government has initiated the trial of two doctors, Michael Atiba and Michael Ugbeye, in connection with the death of a 29-year-old patient, Ejiro Ugorobi.
Both medical professionals are charged with involuntary manslaughter at the Ikeja High Court, where Justice Oyindamola Ogala is presiding over the case.
The case, which began on March 25, 2024, saw both defendants plead not guilty to the charges. The prosecution, led by A.O. Azeez, argues that Atiba, a doctor at Gbagada General Hospital, and Ugbeye, a consultant at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, were responsible for the patient’s death following a medical procedure in October 2023.
During the ongoing trial, the court heard from the first prosecution witness, Mrs. Nkechi Ugorobi, the mother of the deceased. She detailed the events leading up to her son’s death, explaining that Ejiro had sustained a leg injury while playing football on September 9, 2023.
Despite early signs of recovery, including reduced swelling, Ejiro eventually sought further medical attention and consulted Ugbeye at Morningside Specialist Hospital.
Mrs. Ugorobi testified that her son underwent a non-invasive surgery on October 21, 2023, and initially reported that the procedure was successful. However, his condition worsened post-operation, with Ejiro experiencing nausea, shortness of breath, and palpitations. Tragically, he passed away shortly after these symptoms emerged.
As the trial continues, the court has adjourned the proceedings until November 20, 2024, when the prosecution’s second witness is expected to testify.
The case highlights on-going concerns over medical malpractice in the State, as the government seeks justice for the loss of the young man.
