Jamb spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin has explained that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is not the main requirement for gaining admission into higher institutions in Nigeria. Speaking on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria, he said that the most important requirement is having at least five O’Level credits, including English Language and other subjects related to the course a student wants to study.
He explained that the UTME is mainly used to ensure fairness and transparency, especially when many candidates are applying for competitive courses with limited admission spaces.
Benjamin also said that universities still have the power to decide their admissions based on guidelines from education authorities .
He further revealed that Mathematics is no longer compulsory for some courses, especially language-related programmes like Hausa and Arabic, since it is not directly relevant to those fields.
According to him, this change has increased the number of candidates eligible for admission in the 2025 academic session.
