The Ondo State Government has expelled 17 graduating secondary school students and withheld their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and testimonials over what it described as gross misconduct and indiscipline.
The sanction followed the students’ involvement in a chaotic sign-out celebration after completing their final examination papers.
According to the Ondo State Ministry of Education, the affected students were captured in a viral video tearing their school uniforms and chanting strange slogans in a manner deemed inappropriate and disruptive.
The ministry said the action became necessary to serve as a deterrent to other students and uphold discipline within the state’s education system.
Further details obtained by this online newspaper revealed that the students were drawn from three public secondary schools in Akure, the Ondo State capital—Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School and CAC Grammar School.
The government maintained that acts capable of undermining discipline and the values expected of students would not be tolerated, stressing that educational institutions must remain centres of learning and character development.
The development has sparked mixed reactions among residents, with some backing the government’s decision as a necessary disciplinary measure, while others argue that the punishment may be too severe for students celebrating the completion of their secondary education.
