The Super Eagles of Nigeria have made a triumphant return to the international stage, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The encounter, held at the electrifying Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saw Nigeria dominate from start to finish, thanks to a brilliant brace from Ademola Lookman and a stunning volley from Victor Osimhen.
The match began with both teams cautiously probing each other’s defenses, but Nigeria quickly found their rhythm, showcasing their trademark pace and intensity.
The breakthrough came just before halftime, when Lookman capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home a clinical finish in the second minute of added time (45+2’), sending the home fans into a frenzy.
The second half saw the Super Eagles ramp up the pressure, and it paid off in the 78th minute when Victor Osimhen, who had been a constant threat throughout the match, unleashed a powerful volley that left the Benin goalkeeper with no chance. The goal was a testament to Osimhen’s lethal finishing and Nigeria’s relentless attacking approach.
As the match neared its conclusion, Lookman put the game beyond doubt with his second goal in the 83rd minute, securing the victory and earning himself the Man of the Match accolade. His composure and precision in front of goal were a highlight of Nigeria’s performance.
With this win, Nigeria now tops Group D after Matchday 1, setting a strong foundation for their AFCON 2025 qualification campaign.
The Super Eagles’ commanding display has sent a clear message to their rivals: they are back to winning ways and determined to make their mark on the continental stage.
