In a bid to enhance the credibility and efficiency of Nigeria’s elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) division within its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.
The initiative, announced on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chair of the Information and Voter Education Committee, marks a significant technological leap in the commission’s ongoing electoral reform agenda.
Olumekun revealed that the decision was influenced by a series of strategic internal consultations and insights gathered from global discussions on the transformative role of AI in democratic processes.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by AI—particularly its misuse in spreading misinformation—INEC emphasised its commitment to harnessing the technology for positive reform. The newly formed unit is expected to improve election logistics, streamline voter services, and enable more informed decision-making through advanced data analytics.
“The AI division will act as a central hub for managing our technological tools, allowing us to better detect risks, engage voters, and optimise resource allocation using geospatial and predictive analysis,” Olumekun explained.
He noted that the move positions INEC among the pioneers in Africa when it comes to the application of AI in electoral administration.
“This is more than a technological upgrade—it is a deliberate step towards a more transparent, secure, and accountable electoral process,” Olumekun added. “By acting within the scope of administrative reforms, we aim to drive substantial improvements without the need for new legislation.”
The establishment of the AI division forms part of INEC’s broader mission to rebuild public trust in the electoral system through innovative, tech-driven strategies.
