The Executive Chairman of Ovia North East Local Government, Hon. Collins Osamede Ogbewe, has declared his purported impeachment null, void, and unconstitutional.

Addressing journalists during a press briefing in Okada on Tuesday morning, Hon. Ogbewe emphasised that he remains the legitimate head of the local council. He described the impeachment attempt, reportedly carried out by only two out of the 13 councillors in the legislative chamber, as a blatant disregard for due process.

Hon. Ogbewe alleged that the move was orchestrated under the supervision of Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, with the involvement of heavily armed police officers and unnamed non-state actors. He further highlighted a Federal High Court order, issued by Justice Emeka Nwite, which instructed the Edo State Government, House of Assembly, and all parties involved in the Local Government Councils crisis to maintain the status quo as of 15 December 2024.

This order remains in effect pending the determination of the motion on notice filed by the 18 Local Government Council Chairmen across the state.

The chairman also acknowledged the impeachment of Hon. Omoruyi Igbenake, the former leader of Ovia North East’s legislative arm, by 11 out of 13 members for alleged misconduct and abuse of office.

Hon. Ogbewe urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the rule of law would prevail.
