In a heartfelt display of generosity and commitment to education, the Eghosa Anglican Grammar School Alumni Association Chapter in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, USA, has officially launched the construction of a modern e-learning and ICT centre at the school’s premises in Benin City.
The ground-breaking ceremony, held within the school complex, was a proud moment for past and present students alike. Representing the chapter’s president, Dr Osahon Ukponmwan, Lady Omorede Osifo – an alumna and Deputy National Treasurer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – turned the sod to mark the commencement of the transformative project.
Dr Ukponmwan, through a statement delivered by Lady Osifo, explained that the initiative was born out of a collective decision by alumni in the tri-state area of the United States. “Our aim is to equip Eghosa students with the tools necessary to compete globally. This e-learning centre will pave the way for the introduction of smart classroom technology and virtual access to subject experts across the world,” he noted.
The ICT and e-library centre is expected to serve as a technological hub, enhancing digital literacy among students and teachers. The association sees this as a key step toward uplifting education standards at the school, which has a long-standing reputation in Edo State.
Principal of the school, Venerable Osakwe Edokpolor, expressed deep appreciation to the alumni for their continued support, describing the project as a “milestone achievement” in the school’s ongoing development. “This is not their first intervention, and it speaks volumes about their dedication to improving learning conditions here,” he said.
The ceremony drew a host of dignitaries and well-wishers, including Hon. Princess-Charity Osifo of the Edo South State Secondary Education Board; Archbishop Osama Usualele of the United Baptist Church Nigeria; Global President of EGHOBA, Barrister Christian Omatsoni; and Bishop Peter Imasuen, represented by Venerable Charles Imariagbe.
Prayers were offered by Apostle Godspower Ogbomwan of the Christ Apostolic Church of God Mission, who lauded the alumni for their generosity. Students added a festive touch to the event with cultural dances and musical performances.
Lady Osifo, speaking to reporters after the ceremony, said she was personally thrilled to be part of a project that would bring lasting impact. “This initiative will open up opportunities for these children to embrace 21st-century learning and broaden their horizons,” she said.
Construction on the centre is expected to move swiftly, with the alumni pledging sustained support until completion.
