The Edo State Government in collaboration with The Carter Center (TCC) through the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) is currently conducting free hydrocele surgeries for confirmed cases across the State.
This initiative is part of the State Government’s ongoing efforts with support from the Carter Center (TCC) to restore the health and dignity of Edo males who are affected by this condition.
The surgery flag-off began on November 5th 2025 and is currently ongoing at Ubiaja General Hospital, Esan South East LGA.
During a press briefing, at his office at the premises of the Ministry of Health in Benin City, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole explained that Hydrocele is a severe condition that causes swelling and severe discomfort in men, often associated with Lymphatic Filariasis, adding that behind the physical pain is years of physical and financial hardship for families.
In a separate briefing, the Executive Secretary, EDSPHCDA, Dr. Coulson Oahimire Osoikhia expressed gratitude to the Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okphebholo for making free surgeries for hydrocele possible.
”Thanks to the support of the State Government and the Carter Center (TCC), hydrocele surgeries are being offered free of charge by trained medical personnel in the State”. He stated.
In his words, “I want to thank the Governor for making the Primary Healthcare a conduit for delivering this free surgery to Edo people, I also want to say a big thank you to all the stakeholders that have made this surgery possible”.
Dr. Emmanuel Emukah, Director of the Carter Center’s program for Edo and Delta States, also spoke about the long-standing partnership with Edo State to combat neglected tropical diseases. He praised the State’s successful efforts to combat the transmission of Lymphatic Filariasis and emphasized that the current collaboration ensures that free hydrocele surgeries are available at Ubiaja General Hospital, Fugar General Hospital and Iguobazuwa General Hospital.
During the flag-off of the surgeries at Ubiaja General Hospital on November 3rd, 2025, the Director for Disease Control and Immunization, EDSPHCDA Dr. Efeomon Eseigbe who flagged off the event while representing the Executive Secretary EDSPHCDA expressed his gratitude to the State Government for making access to healthcare possible. He also thanked the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, the Executive Secretary EDSPHCDA, Dr. Coulson Oahimire Osoikhia, the Executive Secretary Hospital Management Agency Dr. Tenebe, the Carter Center, the surgeons who volunteered their services as well as the Health Workers for their dedicated service.
Mrs. Poko Happy, the State Coordinator for Neglected Tropical Diseases encouraged the public to take advantage of this opportunity to benefit from the free hydrocele surgeries in the three Senatorial zones, Iguobazuwa for Edo South, Ubiaja for Edo Central and Fugar for Edo North.
A team of surgeons from Ubiaja General Hospital, Fugar General Hospital and Iguobazuwa General Hospital, led by Dr. Otoijamun Fred Iredia, Dr. Daniel Odekina and Dr. Daniel Moses, successfully carried out the surgeries.
Some of the beneficiaries, like Mr. Gideon Opek, a 68-year-old man from Ibillo, Akoko Edo, and Mr. Sunday Nweke from Esan South East, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the State Government, The Carter Center, and the health workers for providing free medical care.
”They have done my surgery successfully, I want to thank the Governor, the Carter Center and the Health workers thank you so much”. He stated
Mr. Nweke, who had been suffering from the hydrocele condition for over nine years, prayed for the Governor and all those who helped to make the surgery possible.
”My name is Sunday Nweke, I am from Esan South East, I am appreciating the Governor for all the good works he is doing, that heavenly Father will bless him and help him more and more, the way he has helped us. I have been ill for nine years without a helper, God will bless them even the doctors”. Mr. Nweke said.
So far, a total of eleven successful hydrocele surgeries for men have been done in Ubiaja General Hospital.
Surgery will also commenced at Iguobazuwa General Hospital (Edo South) and Fugar General Hospital (Edo North) on Monday the 10th of November, 2025.
