A relationship reportedly headed for marriage has collapsed after a prospective groom allegedly walked away upon receiving a bride price list said to be worth nearly ₦12 million.
The development sparked outrage from a matchmaker who claimed she went through significant efforts to connect the 42-year-old woman with the man.
Expressing frustration in a viral outburst, the matchmaker accused the woman’s family of placing excessive financial demands on the prospective husband despite her age and marital history.
According to her, the woman, who is 42 years old, has never been married and has no children. She alleged that after the bride price list was presented, the man stopped taking the woman’s calls and eventually blocked her number.
“I know what I went through before connecting you with that man,” the visibly angry matchmaker lamented, claiming that the hefty demands may have discouraged the suitor from proceeding with the marriage plans.
The incident has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the growing cost of traditional marriage rites and whether excessive bride price demands are discouraging young people from getting married.
While some argued that families have the right to uphold their cultural traditions, others maintained that exorbitant bride price requirements place unnecessary pressure on intending couples and could jeopardise otherwise promising relationships.
