The Federal Government has earmarked ₦8.05 billion for the construction and renovation of churches and mosques in the proposed 2026 budget, a move that is already attracting public scrutiny amid the country’s widening fiscal deficit and mounting socio-economic challenges.
According to the budget proposal, ₦1.91 billion has been allocated for the construction and renovation of seven churches, while ₦6.14 billion is set aside for 52 mosques across the country.
The allocations come despite the proposed ₦31.45 trillion fiscal deficit, which represents about 46 per cent of the total 2026 budget, raising fresh questions over government spending priorities.
Critics argue that the expenditure is difficult to justify at a time when many communities continue to grapple with inadequate primary healthcare facilities, poor educational infrastructure, limited access to clean drinking water, dilapidated roads and rising unemployment.
They contend that with Nigeria’s growing debt burden and shrinking fiscal space, public resources should be channelled towards sectors that directly improve the welfare of citizens and stimulate economic growth.
The proposed spending has also reignited debate over whether taxpayers’ money should be used to fund religious infrastructure instead of addressing pressing development needs, especially as millions of Nigerians battle poverty and worsening living conditions.
While supporters may view the projects as part of government support for religious and community institutions, critics insist that every borrowed and budgeted naira should deliver maximum public value through investments in critical infrastructure, healthcare, education and job creation creation.
