Osimhen Makes History as Galatasaray’s First African Permanent Captain

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has etched his name into Galatasaray’s history books after becoming the first African to be named the club’s permanent captain in its 121-year existence.

The landmark appointment marks another major milestone in the Nigerian forward’s career, underscoring his growing influence at the Turkish champions.

However, the historic decision has already sparked debate in Turkey, with veteran sports journalist Bülent Timurlenk questioning whether Osimhen possesses the temperament required to lead the team on the pitch.

While acknowledging that the Nigerian forward fully deserves the captaincy, Timurlenk argued that Osimhen’s emotional reactions during matches could undermine his effectiveness as skipper.

“While Osimhen wholeheartedly deserves the captaincy, his body language and inability to control his anger in his interactions with referees, opponents, and sometimes teammates, are obstacles to being a good captain,” Timurlenk said.

He added that although Osimhen displays professionalism and passion, his fiery approach could pose challenges in the leadership role.

“Osimhen plays professionally but with an amateur spirit. The technical staff will certainly want to honour him with the armband, but the practical reality on the field is that Abdülkerim is Galatasaray’s first captain,” he stated.

Despite the criticism, Osimhen’s appointment represents a historic moment for both the player and African football, making him the first African to permanently wear the captain’s armband at one of Turkey’s most successful clubs. His leadership will now come under close scrutiny as Galatasaray begin the new season with high expectations on both domestic and European fronts.
