Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he turned down Galatasaray’s iconic No. 9 jersey, choosing instead to continue wearing the No. 45 shirt that accompanied his impressive debut spell with the Turkish champions.
Speaking on the decision, Osimhen admitted that while the famous No. 9 shirt would likely have generated huge commercial interest, sentiment and superstition influenced his choice.
“I expect you’ll sell more shirts, but I think you’ll understand me. Number 45 brought me good luck at Galatasaray,” the Nigerian international said.
The striker’s decision means he will continue to wear No. 45 throughout the new season, a number that became synonymous with his goalscoring exploits and strong connection with the club’s supporters.
Osimhen’s explanation has been warmly received by Galatasaray fans, many of whom view the decision as a sign of his emotional attachment to the club and his desire to build on the success he enjoyed while wearing the jersey.
The Super Eagles forward is expected to spearhead Galatasaray’s domestic and European ambitions this season, with supporters hoping the “lucky” No. 45 shirt will once again inspire another prolific campaign.
