The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed concern over the increasing cultivation of cannabis in forest areas and the growing involvement of schoolchildren in drug-related activities, describing both as major challenges in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
The State Commander of the agency, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, made this known on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Edo State Chapter, and the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) at the NDLEA headquarters in Benin City.
Ofoyeju said the rising trend is making it more difficult to curb the production, distribution and use of illicit drugs across the country. He stressed that tackling substance abuse requires the support of all stakeholders, noting that no single organisation can win the battle alone.
According to him, the cultivation of cannabis in forests not only fuels drug trafficking but also contributes to environmental damage and exposes farmers to exploitation by criminal groups. He also expressed concern over the increasing number of schoolchildren being lured into drug-related activities.
The commander described substance abuse as a chronic brain disorder that requires sustained efforts in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. He added that the visit by the PSN and ACPN was a welcome step towards strengthening the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign.
Speaking during the visit, PSN Chairman in Edo State, Dr. Chris Oisakede, praised the NDLEA’s achievements in reducing drug abuse through enforcement, public awareness and rehabilitation. He assured the agency of the continued support of community pharmacists, who interact with the public daily and can help in promoting responsible drug use.
Also speaking, ACPN Chairman, Dr. Nwachukwu Memili, reaffirmed the commitment of community pharmacists to ethical drug distribution and announced plans to organise a free medical outreach for officers and personnel of the Edo State NDLEA Command.
Former PSN Chairman and Managing Director of VJ Essex Pharmacy, Dr. Grace Ogieva, also commended the progress made in reducing the circulation of illicit drugs through licensed pharmacies. She called for wider awareness campaigns involving pharmaceutical companies, transport unions, religious bodies and community groups to strengthen the fight against drug abuse.
