The House of Representatives Committee on Defence has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of a major expansion of the Nigerian Army and improved welfare for military personnel will significantly strengthen the country’s fight against terrorism and other security threats.
Chairman of the committee, Babajimi Benson, made the assertion in a statement issued on Thursday, commending the President for authorising the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and approving the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel to reinforce the nation’s security architecture.
Benson described the move as a bold and strategic intervention that would enhance the operational strength of the Armed Forces and improve their ability to respond effectively to terrorism, banditry, insurgency and other emerging security challenges across the country.
The lawmaker also applauded the Federal Government’s approval of a salary increase for military personnel, saying improved welfare would boost morale, enhance professionalism and motivate troops to discharge their constitutional duties with greater commitment.
According to him, better remuneration and an expanded military force will translate into improved operational efficiency and increased capacity to restore peace and safeguard lives and property nationwide.
The committee reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting policies and initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities, expressing optimism that the latest reforms would deliver tangible results in the country’s ongoing battle against insecurity.
The commendation comes as security agencies continue intensified operations against terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements in different parts of the country, with stakeholders calling for sustained investment in personnel, equipment and intelligence to achieve lasting peace.
