Residents of Imoga Community in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to take urgent action following the alleged killing of a farmer, Monday Obanigba, by suspected herders.
In a protest letter dated July 20, 2026, and signed by Jeffery Obasanmi, the community called on the governor and security agencies to urgently address the worsening security situation in the area.
The residents said the killing is one of several violent attacks that have continued to threaten lives and property, adding that the persistent insecurity has forced many farmers to stay away from their farmlands, putting their means of livelihood at risk.
They also explained that Imoga’s location, which borders Kogi and Ondo states, has made the community vulnerable to cross-border criminal activities and the movement of armed attackers.
While appreciating the efforts of the state and local governments to improve security, the community appealed for the establishment of a permanent security base in Imoga. They also urged security agencies in Edo, Kogi and Ondo states to strengthen collaboration in tackling crimes along the border communities.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of Akoko Edo Local Government Area, Alabi Oshionogue, described the killing as unfortunate and directed members of the Edo State Security Corps to step up efforts to tackle kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area.
He said the council had committed significant resources to support the security corps and stressed that residents should not still be facing such security challenges despite the presence of security personnel.
Also, the Secretary to the Local Government and Chairman of the Screening Committee, Topa Okomayin, criticised what he described as the poor attitude of some members of the Edo State Security Corps, urging them to show greater commitment to their duties.
