A Catholic priest, Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, has died after a massive crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass at Perpetuo Socorro Church, also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in Ecuador.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in front of worshippers inside the church and thousands of people watching the service via livestream.
Footage of the incident showed the large crucifix leaning away from the wall before crashing down on the altar where the priest was standing.
The incident happened approximately 27 minutes into the ceremony, turning the religious service into a scene of panic and distress.
Emergency responders arrived following the incident, but Fr. Sánchez Molinari died from his injuries.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the priest’s death in an official statement, expressing condolences to his family, friends and the Redemptorist community.
The tragedy has left members of the Catholic community mourning the loss of the priest, whose death occurred while he was performing his religious duties.
