Some financial members and stakeholders of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Alumni Association Home Branch, have rejected the outcome of the branch’s Aug. 14 election, alleging serious irregularities and calling for a fresh exercise.
In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos, the concerned members appealed to the National Executive Council (NEC) of the AAU Alumni Worldwide and other relevant stakeholders to intervene in the dispute.
The members alleged that the electoral process was flawed from the outset, citing disagreements over the composition of the Electoral Committee (ELECO) and repeated changes to the election timetable.
They claimed that nominations were reopened and extended to Aug. 10, while the manifesto presentation was held on Aug. 13, barely a day before the election.
The group also questioned the decision to use a private residence allegedly belonging to an interested party as the polling centre, describing it as a possible conflict of interest.
Concerns were also raised over the financial report presented at the branch’s end-of-tenure meeting. According to the members, the report provided only summary figures for income and expenditure and carried a December 2025 date despite being presented in August 2026.
On election day, the group alleged that more than 140 financial members were present but were unable to vote. It further claimed that an NEC observer took control of the proceedings and introduced voting restrictions that allegedly prevented some constitutionally eligible members from participating.
The members also complained about the heavy security presence at the venue, alleging that soldiers, police officers and armed youths were deployed, creating an intimidating environment.
They claimed that some members, including academics, professionals and business leaders, were allegedly harassed and verbally abused during the exercise.
Another issue raised was the use of an alleged list of 49 voters. The group claimed the list was not made available to members before the election and excluded some active financial members while including others who had not regularly participated in branch meetings.
The members further alleged discrepancies between the number of accredited voters and the votes counted, saying the disagreement over the figures disrupted the process.
They also claimed that results for some executive positions were not publicly announced.
According to the group, the controversy continued after the election when the ELECO chairman allegedly released a partial result at about 10:13 p.m. on Aug. 14, declaring a winner for the chairmanship. The statement was reportedly deleted less than an hour later.
The members said another statement was subsequently issued around 5:15 a.m. on Aug. 15 in an attempt to address the disputed figures.
Consequently, they are demanding the cancellation of the election, dissolution and reconstitution of the ELECO, and the conduct of a fresh election that complies with the association’s constitution.
They are also calling for a five-year audit of the Home Branch’s finances.
The group gave the Worldwide President and NEC seven days to address its concerns, warning that failure to act could result in the withdrawal of subscriptions, establishment of a parallel branch and possible legal action.
The allegations made by the concerned members could not be independently verified by NAN at the time of filing the report.
