A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has taken a swipe at activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following his remand in Kuje Custodial Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore was on Monday ordered into custody after the court upheld the revocation of his bail in an ongoing trial linked to comments he made about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on social media.
Reacting to the development, Igbokwe threw his weight behind the court’s decision, insisting that repeatedly attacking the President was not a profession.
“Abusing Tinubu is not a career,” the APC stalwart declared while commenting on the activist’s legal troubles.
According to him, Nigeria is governed by laws and no individual should consider himself above the legal system.
“Nigeria is not a lawless country. Sowore has taken the law into his hands for years now. Protests on the streets, disturbing public peace, abusing law enforcement officers, encouraging killers in the South East, abusing PBAT, these are not a career,” Igbokwe stated.
The comments have since generated mixed reactions on social media, with supporters and critics of both men debating the propriety of Sowore’s activism and the court’s decision to remand him.
Sowore is currently facing trial over cybercrime allegations arising from a social media post in which he allegedly referred to President Tinubu as “a criminal.”
The activist remains in custody pending the hearing of his application seeking a stay of execution of the court order that revoked his bail.
