A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Custodial Centre following the revocation of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order on Monday, June 22, after dismissing Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s withdrawal from the case over allegations of bias.
Sowore is currently facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) on cybercrime charges stemming from a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “a criminal.”
In a brief ruling, Justice Umar directed that the activist be kept in custody pending the hearing and determination of his application seeking a stay of execution of the court’s earlier order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant against him.
The court subsequently adjourned proceedings until June 24 for the hearing of the application.
The latest development follows last week’s decision by the court to revoke Sowore’s bail after he allegedly failed to appear for his trial as required.
The ruling marks a fresh twist in the legal battle involving the outspoken activist, whose prosecution has continued to attract significant public attention and debate.
With Sowore now remanded in Kuje prison, attention is expected to shift to Wednesday’s proceedings, where the court will determine whether to suspend the enforcement of the orders that led to his detention.
