Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the killings and politically motivated violence that marred the build-up to Saturday’s governorship election.
Adeleke said the commission would be constituted on Monday, immediately after the conclusion of the election, to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attacks and identify those responsible.
The governor, who spoke through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, at a press conference in Osogbo, expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones during the tense election period.
He said the inquiry would investigate all reported killings and acts of violence, regardless of the political affiliation or status of those involved.
«“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation,” Adeleke said.»
According to him, the commission will establish the facts surrounding the incidents and recommend appropriate measures to ensure that anyone found culpable faces justice.
Adeleke also promised that his administration would establish a framework to support and compensate families who lost relatives to the violence.
The governor stressed that Osun must remain united despite political differences, insisting that the state owes victims justice, their families compassion and its people a peaceful future.
The move comes amid heightened political tension in the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, with the governor pledging that perpetrators of election-related violence would not be shielded by political connections or influence.
