The Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, is battling for his life after suspected gunmen opened fire on him and his associates in a late-night attack in Osogbo.
The attack, which occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, threw residents into panic around the Osogbo Community Bank axis of the MDS area of the state capital as the assailants reportedly unleashed a barrage of bullets on the victims’ blue Toyota Corolla.
Ajibola narrowly escaped death but sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where sources said he remains in critical condition.
One of the occupants of the bullet-riddled vehicle, who recounted the incident, said the attackers carried out the operation in a commando-style manner.
“We were coming from the MDS area of Osogbo at about 9:50 p.m. when gun-wielding men suddenly chased us and released a volley of bullets at our vehicle,” he said.
“However, we managed to escape to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters in Osogbo, where we sought protection before the assailants retreated and fled.
“We reported the incident to the police and immediately rushed the seriously wounded Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola to the Uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he is currently receiving medical attention.”
The attack has sparked concern among political stakeholders and residents, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Reacting to the development, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, condemned the attack and urged security agencies to ensure that those behind the incident are brought to justice.
Describing the shooting as unfortunate, Alimi said the matter must not be swept under the carpet.
“It is an unfortunate incident which should not be allowed to go uninvestigated. The culprits must be brought to book,” he stated.
He further called on the police to conduct a professional investigation without fear or favour, noting that available indications suggested the attack may have political undertones.
“We are therefore calling on the police to carry out their investigation professionally, without fear or favour, in unearthing the masterminds of the attack, which from all available indices has elements of political coloration,” Alimi added.
Meanwhile, Nigerian music star Davido has reacted to reports of the shooting of the Accord Party chairman.
Taking to his X handle, the singer condemned the attack and warned against actions capable of worsening insecurity in the state ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
Davido, whose uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is associated with the Accord Party’s political alliance in the state, said political differences should never result in violence.
According to him, the alleged murder attempt must be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation.
He further stated that if the All Progressives Congress (APC) is confident of its popularity among voters, it should demonstrate such strength through the ballot box rather than through violence, guns or other weapons.
The singer’s reaction comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
