The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Djurtus produced a dominant display in Bissau, exposing Nigeria’s defensive frailties and punishing a lacklustre Super Eagles side.
Franculino Djú put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute, leaving Nigeria chasing the game for much of the encounter.
Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and failed to mount a meaningful response after falling behind.
Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Mama Baldé produced a superb individual effort, dribbling past Bright Osayi-Samuel before curling the ball into the far corner.
The hosts then completed the rout deep into stoppage time, with Álvaro Djaló making it 3-0 in the 95th minute.
The result leaves Guinea-Bissau at the top of Group L, while Nigeria remain second despite the heavy defeat.
The defeat is a major setback for the Super Eagles, who opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo.
Group L presents an unusual qualification situation because co-hosts Tanzania already have an automatic place at the 2027 AFCON finals. As a result, only one team from the group will secure the additional qualifying ticket.
Nigeria’s failure to find the net in Bissau, coupled with defensive lapses that allowed the hosts to score three times, leaves the Super Eagles with plenty of work to do in their remaining qualifying fixtures.
The poor condition of the playing surface was also evident during the encounter, with concerns having been raised before kick-off about the state of the pitch.
