A 25-year-old female student has reportedly died in a suspected suicide incident in Onitsha, Anambra State, following a heartbreaking relationship crisis.
The young woman was found dead on June 18 under circumstances suggesting suicide, prompting the Anambra State Police Command to commence an investigation into the tragic development.
A note believed to have been written by the deceased was recovered at the scene. In the emotional message, she reportedly alleged that her boyfriend, identified only as Chigozie, ended their relationship after she had undergone three abortions for him.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the development as disturbing and stressed the need for stronger emotional support systems for young people.
The police commissioner noted that although investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the death, the tragedy highlights the importance of parental guidance, moral upbringing, and mental health awareness among youths.
Orutugu urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the emotional well-being, social interactions, and behavioural changes of their children and wards.
He also called on community leaders, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to intensify advocacy and mentorship programmes aimed at promoting positive values, resilience, and responsible living among young people.
Further details obtained by this online newspaper revealed that the police boss has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a thorough and discreet investigation.
The command said efforts are ongoing to unravel the circumstances leading to the student’s death and determine whether any individual may have played a role in the incident.
