The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), after his detention at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Ajaero was released late Monday night, following significant pressure from the NLC and its affiliate unions.
Ajaero, who was apprehended by the DSS on Monday, September 9, while en route to the United Kingdom for a global Trade Union Congress meeting, was released on bail around 11:00 pm after providing a written statement.
Sources within the NLC revealed that the decision to release Ajaero came in response to a stern warning from the Labour union.
The NLC had threatened to mobilize its affiliate unions for a nationwide strike if Ajaero was not freed by midnight on Monday, September 9. This threat appears to have been a significant factor in the swift decision to grant his release.
The circumstances surrounding Ajaero’s arrest remain unclear, and the DSS has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
However, the NLC’s swift response underscores the union’s resolve to protect its leaders and maintain its influence in national affairs.
