The General Hospital in Sabongidda Ora, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, has deteriorated into a disturbing state of disrepair, leaving residents of more than 17 communities facing serious challenges in accessing basic healthcare.

The condition of the facility has raised fresh questions about the Edo State Government’s commitment to providing functional healthcare infrastructure in rural communities.

The hospital, which should serve as a critical healthcare centre for thousands of residents, is reportedly struggling with severe structural damage, including a badly damaged roof with sections torn open and parts of the building exposed to the elements.

Inside the facility, the situation is even more alarming. A large opening in the roof has reportedly left patients and healthcare workers exposed to rainfall and other harsh weather conditions, raising concerns about the safety and suitability of the hospital for medical treatment.

For residents who depend on the facility, the consequences are potentially grave. Rather than receiving medical attention close to home, residents are being forced to travel to neighbouring towns for basic medical services because the hospital has been allowed to deteriorate to such an unacceptable condition.

The situation becomes particularly troubling in emergencies. What happens when a pregnant woman needs urgent medical attention? What happens when a child suddenly falls critically ill? What happens when an elderly resident requires immediate treatment?

These are not political questions. They are questions of life and death. The Edo State Government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, must explain why such an important healthcare facility has not received urgent intervention.

Sabongidda Ora General Hospital is reportedly the only general hospital serving more than 17 communities in the area. Its deterioration therefore goes beyond the condition of a single public building; it represents a direct threat to healthcare access for a significant rural population.

The situation is also coming at a time when substantial federal allocations have accrued to the State. Public records indicate that Edo State received approximately ₦116.89 billion in gross FAAC allocation between January and June 2026, with a further ₦28.36 billion reportedly received in July.

With such resources accruing to the State, residents of Owan West deserve to see meaningful investments in essential infrastructure, particularly healthcare facilities that directly affect human lives.

The people are not demanding luxury. They are asking for a hospital with a safe roof, functional facilities, adequate equipment and the capacity to provide basic and emergency medical care.

The issue should not be reduced to political affiliations or endorsements. Healthcare is a fundamental public responsibility, and the condition of a hospital serving more than 17 communities deserves immediate attention regardless of who residents voted for.

Governor Okpebholo should visit the Sabongidda Ora General Hospital and personally inspect its condition. He should see the damaged roof, the exposed sections of the building and the environment in which patients and health workers are expected to operate.

The people of Owan West should not have to travel from one town to another before government takes their healthcare needs seriously.

A hospital should be a place of safety, treatment and hope — not a structure where patients and medical workers are left exposed to the elements.

The Edo State Government must act before the next medical emergency turns an infrastructure failure into a preventable tragedy.
