A Primary Health Care Centre serving over 7,000 residents in Okpokhumi–Emai, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, has reportedly fallen into disrepair, raising fresh concerns over the State of rural healthcare infrastructure. Uptown Press reports.
The alarm was raised by MonITNG, which described the facility as severely neglected and on the brink of collapse, despite being listed as “functional” in official records.
According to the organisation, the health centre caters to residents of Ojavun, Emai, Evbiamen and neighbouring communities but has been badly damaged by wind, leaving sections of the building exposed and unsafe.
“This is a facility that should provide essential healthcare services, yet it has been completely destroyed by wind,” MonITNG stated.
“The wards are exposed, the building is on the verge of collapse, and medical equipment has been ruined.”
The group decried what it called a glaring disconnect between administrative data and the reality on ground, noting that the continued classification of the facility as functional undermines accountability in the health sector.
It further criticised the persistent neglect of rural communities, arguing that development efforts remain skewed towards urban centres, leaving vulnerable populations without access to basic healthcare.
MonITNG also took aim at political representatives of the area, including Adams Oshiomhole and Julius Ihonvbere, alleging that their interventions have failed to address the urgent infrastructural decay, instead focusing on empowerment initiatives deemed insufficient by residents.
“This is happening while rural communities remain neglected, with development efforts concentrated in urban areas,” the organisation said.
Attributing the situation to poor needs assessment and weak project implementation, MonITNG questioned the utilisation of funds allocated to the health sector, insisting that critical infrastructure continues to be abandoned despite significant budgetary provisions.
Residents of the affected communities have now called on the Edo State Government and the Federal Ministry of Health to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the facility, warning that access to basic healthcare remains severely compromised.
“The people of Okpokhumi–Emai and surrounding communities deserve access to functional healthcare and responsive governance,” the group added.
