Edo State University, Uzairue, celebrated the induction of 68 new nurses from the Department of Nursing Sciences, marking the fourth batch of graduates for the 2023/2024 academic year.
The induction ceremony, held by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), was an opportunity to emphasise the growing responsibilities and evolving nature of the nursing profession in Nigeria.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Edo State University, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, praised the graduates, stressing the university’s commitment to producing highly skilled professionals. He reminded the inductees of the immense responsibility they carry as healthcare providers, noting that nursing is both a profession and a lifelong commitment to learning and compassion.
“As future leaders in healthcare, you bear the crucial responsibility of caring for the vulnerable and the ailing, a role that requires unwavering dedication,” Egbefo remarked.
He also lauded the Edo State government for upgrading the central hospital in Auchi to the Edo State University Teaching Hospital, significantly enhancing the training environment for medical and nursing students.
During the ceremony, the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Ndagi Al-hassan, represented by Dr. Dorothy Oneh, formally certified the graduates, affirming their qualifications to work in healthcare facilities across Nigeria.
Al-hassan urged the inductees to adhere strictly to the ethical guidelines of the profession.
In her address, Dr. Beatrice Obende, Lecturer in Charge of the Department of Nursing, commended the inductees for their hard work and dedication over the five-year training program.
She highlighted that nursing is not just a career but a vocation, urging the new nurses to prioritise patient care and uphold the rights and dignity of those they serve.
The Ag Dean of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Dr. Omoruyi Pius Omosigho, expressed pride in the faculty’s role in shaping the graduates’ academic and professional paths.
He encouraged them to be exemplary ambassadors of both the university and their profession as they embark on their internships.
A key highlight of the event was a lecture delivered by Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogunyewo from the University of Jos, who spoke on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. In his paper titled: “Artificial Intelligence: Impact on Nursing”, Prof. Ogunyewo noted that nursing practices are increasingly driven by information and communication technologies (ICT).
He encouraged nurses to embrace AI and other emerging technologies to enhance their efficiency and provide higher-quality care.
As these newly inducted nurses prepare to join the workforce, they carry with them not only the skills and knowledge acquired during their time at Edo State University but also a vision for the future of healthcare, shaped by technological advancements and a deep commitment to patient well-being.
