Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating tanker explosion that claimed more than 100 lives in Jigawa State.
In a statement delivered on Wednesday, Shettima, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and assured them of the Federal Government’s immediate intervention.
“My heart aches for those who have had their families torn apart by this disaster,” Shettima stated. “This devastating incident has shaken us all to our core. The Federal Government stands with the people of Jigawa. We are mobilizing all necessary resources to support the injured and assist the families affected by this calamity.”
The explosion, which occurred in the Majiya area, has plunged the nation into mourning. In response, Shettima has ordered the deployment of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to Jigawa State to provide immediate relief efforts, including medical assistance and support for those impacted.
“As we contend with this tragedy, let us also reflect on the importance of safety measures and public awareness to prevent such incidents in the future,” Shettima stressed. “Every life is precious, and we must do all we can to protect our citizens.”
He further called for a comprehensive review of fuel transportation safety protocols across Nigeria to prevent future tragedies of this magnitude.
In addition to extending his condolences, Shettima praised first responders and medical personnel for their prompt and tireless efforts to manage the crisis, stating that their bravery and dedication “exemplify the best of our nation’s spirit.”
Just last week, Vice President Shettima had inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC) and emphasized the need for the council to adopt global best practices in road safety.
He urged members to set ambitious National Road Safety Strategy targets and to ensure coordination among federal, state, and local governments in reducing traffic-related fatalities.
“Road safety is not merely a matter of policy but a critical part of the lifeline that connects the people of this nation,” Shettima noted.
