In response to the recent flooding that devastated several communities in Etsako Central, Edo State, the local government Council Chairman, Hon. Solomon Osomegbe, has swiftly mobilised efforts to provide relief and rehabilitation to affected residents.
Following a heartfelt appeal from the elders of Udaba Ekperi, where homes and farmlands were submerged, Hon. Osomegbe personally visited 11 communities on Wednesday to assess the extent of the damage.
The Chairman described the flood as “pathetic” and called for the intervention of both the State Emergency Management Authority and the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) to provide further assistance.
According to an interim report from the council, over 2,000 people have been displaced, more than 100 homes have been submerged, and thousands of hectares of farmland have been destroyed.
In response, Hon. Osomegbe announced that the council has begun the rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ekperi. The camp will house those displaced by the disaster, with provisions for food and essential supplies already being arranged.
Additionally, the council has held an emergency meeting to devise proactive measures aimed at preventing potential outbreaks of disease in the flood-ravaged communities.
This bold step by the council reflects the urgency of the situation and underscores the need for swift action to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the flood.
