In a decisive move to resolve its ongoing leadership crisis, the Labour Party (LP) has appointed Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the Chairman of a newly formed 29-member Caretaker Committee.

The appointment was announced during a high-stakes stakeholders meeting held on Wednesday in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

Senator Usman, a former Minister of Finance and a distinguished representative of Kaduna South senatorial district from 2011 to 2015, has been entrusted with the significant task of reorganizing the party.

Her primary responsibility will be to steer the LP towards stability and prepare it for upcoming electoral challenges. The Caretaker Committee, under her leadership, has been given a 90-day mandate to fulfill its objectives, which include organizing a national convention to elect new leadership across all levels of the party.

The meeting, which solidified Senator Usman’s appointment, was hosted by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and saw the attendance of key LP figures. Among them were the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate Datti Ahmed, Senator Victor Umeh, and Lagos State governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

The presence of these top officials underscored the importance of the gathering and the widespread support for the committee’s formation.

Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the immediate-past Senate Minority Deputy Leader, has been named as the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, further adding to the team’s political experience and credibility.
