The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) are facing mounting criticism over their continued silence following the alleged racial abuse of Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo after she publicly disclosed the reported theft of cash belonging to Nigerian players in Morocco.
The backlash comes more than 48 hours after Okoronkwo, who also plays for AFC Toronto, was allegedly subjected to racist insults and abusive comments by some Moroccans following her claims that $1,220 was stolen from Super Falcons players while the team was camped at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Critics have faulted the absence of any public statement from the NFF or the NSC condemning the alleged abuse or indicating that a formal complaint would be lodged with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The silence has triggered widespread concerns among football stakeholders and supporters, who argue that national sporting authorities have a responsibility to publicly defend and protect athletes representing the country on the international stage.
While the Nigerian football authorities have yet to react publicly, Okoronkwo’s club, AFC Toronto, issued a statement condemning the alleged racist abuse and expressing support for the Super Falcons star.
The incident has also attracted attention across social media and sections of the sports media, with many calling for stronger institutional action against racism in football and greater protection for Nigerian athletes competing abroad.
The controversy stems from Okoronkwo’s public revelation that cash belonging to several Super Falcons players allegedly disappeared from their hotel rooms in Casablanca during Nigeria’s pre-tournament training camp.
Moroccan police have since confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the alleged theft, with reports indicating that the suspect confessed and that efforts are underway to recover the stolen money while criminal proceedings continue.
As pressure continues to mount, stakeholders are urging the NFF and the NSC to publicly address the allegations of racial abuse and demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of Nigerian athletes both on and off the field.
