Moroccan police have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of cash belonging to several Super Falcons players at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, just days before the start of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime and is expected to refund the stolen money, while criminal proceedings have been initiated, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The theft occurred on the final day of Nigeria’s training camp in Casablanca before the 10-time African champions relocated to Rabat for their Group C campaign.
Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo revealed that she, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among the victims, alleging that more than $1,000 was stolen from their hotel rooms.
Okoronkwo also criticised the hotel’s handling of the incident, accusing members of staff of failing to respond appropriately after the theft was reported.
“We started talking to them and they don’t have answers. They also started being disrespectful,” she said, while urging the public to avoid patronising the hotel.
Providing an update on the investigation, Nigerian journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh disclosed on Sunday that the case had recorded a major breakthrough.
“I have been informed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft at the Super Falcons’ Marriott Hotel in Casablanca and has confessed. Full restitution will be made to the players while the law takes its course,” Udoh stated.
Despite the incident, the Super Falcons have turned their attention to the continental tournament. Head coach Justine Madugu’s side is set to open its WAFCON 2026 campaign against Malawi on Tuesday at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
The team held two training sessions at the AS FAR training ground on Sunday as preparations intensified for the crucial Group C opener.
Nigeria, Africa’s most successful women’s national team with 10 WAFCON titles, will also face Zambia and Egypt in the group stage as the Falcons bid to capture a record-extending 11th continental crown.
