Former adult film actress Amaranta Hank, whose real name is Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia after winning a Senate seat on a campaign centred on the rights and legal protection of adult-content creators.
The 33-year-old’s transition from the adult entertainment industry to national politics has drawn widespread attention, making her one of Colombia’s most unconventional lawmakers.
Hank campaigned on improving workplace protections, legal recognition and social security for adult-content creators, arguing that millions of people consume adult content while those who produce it remain marginalised and excluded from labour protections.
Addressing her critics, the newly sworn-in senator defended her past and pledged to fight inequality.
“I may have worked in the adult film industry, but my experience has shown me why inequality must be challenged,” she said.
She also criticised what she described as society’s double standards towards the industry.
“Millions of people consume adult content, yet the people who create it are often denied basic workplace protections, social security and legal recognition. In the end, many people pretend they don’t watch it,” Hank stated.
Her election marks an unusual political journey and has sparked debate in Colombia over labour rights, social inclusion and the recognition of workers in the adult entertainment industry.
